Irmo bounced back from a sub par showing in 2008 by going 14-6-2 this season. And with just two starters graduating, the Yellow Jackets are expecting even better things next spring.
”We were a much improved team, even though we started four freshmen, two sophomores, and two juniors,” said coach Mike Mauldin. “With another year of experience and a taste of the playoffs our 2010 season looks promising.”
Indeed, the Yellow Jackets can be expected to challenge for the Region 5-4A championship after finishing second to Dutch Fork this spring, and make a deeper run in the state playoffs. Irmo was eliminated in the second round by eventual state runner-up Wando.
Alicia Baxter and Stephanie Funderburk are the two departing senior starters.
The returning cast is led by the high-scoring duo of Bianca Warder and Amy Dherckers. They were joined on the all-region team by teammates Abby Frick and Danielle Werdunn. Warder, voted the region player of the year, and Dherckers were also the Jackets’ all-state picks.
Karli Farnham, Rachael Mitchell, Kelly Vander Heide, Taylor Kelley and Gina Cox are the other starters set to return in 2010.
