Outlook: Cardinal Newman comes off season where it went 8-2 in region play and advanced to the SCISA semifinals. Martin, a junior, and August, a sophomore, give the Cardinals strong players at the top two singles slots. Zokan will help at the bottom of the lineup.

Last year: Placed second in SCISA
Key returners: Lauren Armstrong, Carolina Lough, Karson Kocher, Kathrine Lough.
Outlook: The Highlanders are poised to grab a state championship after finishing second in 2008. Anderson, in his first year at Heathwood Hall, likes his singles lineup. Armstrong and Carolina Lough provide senior leadership at the top of the lineup.
Coach: Martha Zion
Last year: 13-4 overall, 6-2 in Region 5-3A.
Key returners: Kimberly Baston, Mackin Wall, Jaya Wall, Mary Diller.
Outlook: Zion, the Bearcats' first-year coach, looks to break in with a strong season. The Bearcats have seniors at four of their top five singles positions. Baston, Jaya Wall and Diller are at 2, 4 and 5. Newcomer April Horne began her senior season at No.1 for Brookland-Cayce.
Coach: Nick Hendrix
Last year: 12-2 overall, 10-0 in Region 4-4A.
Key returners: Lee Ferrell, Mikaela Kig, Alex Thompson, Ellie Hoffman, Brittany Henry.
Outlook: Blythewood dominated the region to win the championship before losing in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. The Bengals will replace No. 1 singles star Amanda Malatek with Ferrell, a junior. King and Hoffman are eighth graders playing key roles for the Bengals.
Coach: Suzanne Gray
Last year: 14-4, 11-3 in Region 5-4A.
Key returners: Mary Chris Satterthwaite, Erin Westerkan, Mavina Guram, Jennifer Anderson, Olivia Haley.
Outlook: The Yellow Jackets saw their strong 2008 season end at the hands of powerhouse Wando in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Irmo returns five of its top six singles players, led by Satterthwaite at No. 1. Freshman Ashley Hawkins is making an impact at No. 2, giving the Yellow Jackets a strong, deep lineup.
Coach: Laurens Hargett
Last year: 3-9, 1-7 in Region 5-3A
Key returners: Ashley Lewis, Haley Anderson, Shanieka Staley, Connilee Leaphart, Karolyne Floyd.
Outlook: Airport struggled through a tough campaign last season, but the Eagles have shown a determination to get better. Four of the top five singles players return, with Lewis and Anderson back at the top two singles slots.
Coach: Eric Jackson
Last year: 18-2, 14-0 in Region 5-4A.
Key returners: Erin Green, Sarah Kim, Rachel Lovaas.
Outlook: Lexington ran roughshod over Region 5-4A last season and advanced to the Class 4A semifinals before a loss to a dominant Wando team. Jackson's Wildcats lost the top four players from that team and look to rebuild behind juniors Green and Lovaas. Kim is the lone senior near the top of the lineup.
Coaches: Julie Martin, Gina Hilts
Last year: Placed second in Region 5-4A.
Key returners: Mareli Sanchez, Svannah Savage, Ali Savage, Layla Asghari, Jillian Cothran.
Outlook: The Silver Foxes have a young but experienced team. Five starters return from the team that placed second in Region 5-4A to Lexington in 2008. Three of the returning players are sophomores: Mareli Sanchez, Ali Savage and Asghari. Savannah Savage, at No. 2, is a senior.
Coach: John Rodgers
Last year: 15-3, 8-2 in Region 4-3A
Key returners: Jordan Broadway, Emilee Gray, Jenna Taylor, Jayde Corley.
Outlook: Chapin comes off a strong 2008 where the Eagles placed second in their region. Taylor Matthews, projected as the team's No. 1 singles player this season, is out with a back injury. Amber Johnson, a sopohomore who transferred from Bluffton, should help Chapin's depth.
Coach: Sarah VanLangendon
Last year: 16-1, 4-0 in Region 5-2A.
Key returners: Kayla Meermans, Alexandria Kneece, Mariel Fleming, Meg Padgett, Rayma Shumpert.
Outlook: Pelion was unbeaten last season before a loss in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Panthers are set up to repeat their success with seven returning starters, including their entire singles lineup. Meermans and Kneece, both juniors, are the Panthers top two singles players.
Coach: David Kleinfelder
Last year: 7-8, third place in Region 5-3A
Key returners: Mariclaire Martin, Chandler Degenhart, Shelby McKeown, Racquel Brown, Michaela Close.
Outlook: The Blue Devils aim to move up in Region 5-3A with five returning starters. Dreher is bolstered by the arrival of sophomore Alexa Breeland, who has earned the No. 1 singles position. Fellow sophomores Martin and Degehart give the Blue Devils a strong nucleus for the future.
