Dutch Fork’s cross country teams turned in solid performances at Saturday’s Sandhills Invitational.
Individually, senior Samantha Hughes and sophomore Roland Hakes were outstanding. Hughes was the girls winner with a national elite time of 19 minutes, 42.78 seconds, while Hakes finished second behind Ridge View’s Joe Keitt with a time of 16:34.64.
Hughes paced a winning team effort, as well. The Silver Foxes emerged with a 53-71 winning margin over second-place Lexington, which entered the meet with a higher Class 4A ranking. The Wildcats were No. 7 in the most recent poll, while DF was ninth. Look for the Foxes to move up when the next listings are released.
Hughes had solid backing from senior Michelle Arms (6th, 20:32.79) and freshmen Haley Saxby (9th, 21:21.13), Amelia Syfert (12th, 21:24.57) and Hannah Martin (25th, 22:53.98).
Never miss a local story.
Hakes helped the eighth-ranked DF boys claim third place behind the elite Blazers and Lexington, and finish ahead of short-handed, sixth-ranked Spring Valley.
Lining up behind Hakes in scoring position were sophomore Zachary Jaynes (15th, 17:37.31), seniors Zach Duskin (21st, 17:53.23) and Grant Pensa (31st, 18:17.38) and junior Collin Studemeyer (36th, 18:32.56).
