Irmo notes: The Yellow Jackets (6-1, 3-0) scored a huge 31-24 region road win over North Augusta last week with star senior Mustafa Greene watching on the sidelines with a severe ankle sprain ... No problem. Dawan Scott filled in for Greene and produced 115 yards rushing on 24 carries. Quarterback David Olson and receiver David Frazier continued to work their passing magic. Olson was 10-for-21 for 224 yards and two TDs. Frazier caught six balls for 149 yards, including scoring plays covering 33 and 82 yards … But in the end, it was the Irmo defense that made the key win possible. With 3:23 to go and the score even at 24, NA quarterback Lorenzo Hammonds, who had a huge game (156 yards rushing, 260 passing), was hit by Markeem Blount and fumbled at the NA 11. Bryce Douglass followed the bouncing ball to the end zone where he fell on it for the winning points. On the ensuing possession, Johnathan Detouche sealed NA’s fate with an interception … Blount came up big on the defensive front with nine tackles, one TFL, two sacks and caused two fumbles.
Lexington notes: The Wildcats (3-4, 2-1) are averaging an astonishing 49.7 points in region play. It’s all about the run at Lexington … Shaq Roland ran for 249 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s 49-30 win over Orangeburg-Wilkinson. The sophomore quarterback had 303 yards rushing and three scores in a 51-49 loss to Richland Northeast on Oct. 2 … Adrian Wigfall has also had two big back-to-back games. Against RNE, the senior back darted for 148 yards rushing and two TDs, and finished with 269 all-purpose yards. Last week at O-W, Wigfall ran for 105 yards on 13 carries, returned three kickoffs for 188 yards and scored twice.
Series history: The so-called “Battle of the Dam” has been a rather one-sided affair since Irmo and Lexington first met in 1970. The Yellow Jackets enter the latest edition with a nine-game winning streak against the Wildcats and enjoy a commanding 32-9 edge in the series.
