LEXINGTON - Mustafa Greene was reduced to a spectator role for the second week in a row, but the Irmo Yellow Jackets kept rolling along.
Dawan Scott, Greene's replacement in the backfield, went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the second week in a row to help the Yellow Jackets defeat the Wildcats 31-10 on Friday.
Scott ran for 199 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries to headline Irmo's key region victory. The Jackets (7-1, 4-0 in Region 5-4A) have won 10 in a row vs. Lexington and enjoy a 33-9 lead in the series, which began in 1970.
"Dawan's not Mustafa, but he's good enough," Irmo coach Bob Hanna said. "He knows how to play this game, and we trust him."
Never miss a local story.
Greene, who sustained a high-ankle sprain on Oct. 2, is on the mend.
"I'm pretty confident that Mustafa will be back before the end of the regular season, but we feel pretty good about all the kids we do have out on the field," Hanna said.
The Irmo boss was particularly pleased with the defensive performance against a team that scored 98 points combined in its previous two games. The Jackets defense limited Lexington's option attack to one touchdown and 169 yards.
"The defensive staff put together a good package, and the kids executed," Hanna said.
"The key was playing with discipline. We gave up some yards here and there, but not the big play. It was a real good performance."
Lexington (3-5, 2-2) took the opening kickoff and drove 61 yards before stalling at the Irmo 5-yard line. Wes Bennett's 22-yard field goal gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Irmo countered with a 45-yard drive on its first possession but, like Lexington, sputtered at the 5 and had to settle for a 22-yard field goal. Kyle Simpson's kick tied the score as time expired in the opening quarter.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead for good on a 24-yard run by Scott on fourth-and-1 at the 3:22 mark of the second quarter
Irmo put it away with two scoring drives in the third quarter, extending its lead to 24-3.
Scott capped both marches with short scoring runs.
"The team told Mustafa that we've got his back," Scott said. "This is my chance to step in and help the team until he gets back."
