North Augusta traveled to Harry Parone Stadium and defeated Richland Northeast 35-0 in a matchup for second place in Region 5-4A.
The Yellow Jackets used a balanced attack and a stifling defense to end the Cavaliers' four-game winning streak.
North Augusta (8-1, 4-1) scored on their opening possession on a one-yard run from Vinny Miller that capped a nine-play 73-yard drive. The lead was pushed to 14-0 on a 1-yard run from Demarcus Rouse midway through the second quarter.
The Yellow Jackets kept RNE out of the end zone just before the half. The Cavaliers (4-5, 4-1) had a first-and-goal on the 2, but an offsides and personal foul penalty on the Cavaliers pushed the ball back to the 25, and a 42-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.
Never miss a local story.
"Our defense was able to contain the speed of Northeast and we fought really hard tonight. I am extremely proud of the way our kids performed tonight," North Augusta coach Dan Pippin said.
North Augusta put the game away in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns. The first came on the first possession of the half: a nine-play 66 yard drive and capped by a 7-yard run by quarterback Lorenzo Hammonds. After the teams traded punts, the Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to 28-0 on a 13-yard pass from Hammonds to Jessie Pernell.
"Our offense has had a really good season led by our quarterback and running back. Those kids and our seniors have shown great leadership and have helped us be successful this year," Pippin said.
The Yellow Jackets held the Cavaliers to 40 yards of offense in the second half. "Our focus was on containing their quarterback, who is an excellent player. We have hung our hats all year on our team speed, and it really worked well for us tonight," Pippin said.
North Augusta's final score was set up by linebacker L.J. Perry's interception and 21-yard return to the Northeast 11 yard line. On the next play, Rouse ran 11 yards on a draw play up the middle to finish the scoring, 35-0.
North Augusta travels to play Lexington next week, while Richland Northeast will visit Irmo.
