Beaufort High School linebacker Justin Parker has emerged as one of the nation's top recruiting prospects, earning more than a dozen scholarship offers from Division I schools and cracking Sporting News Today's list of top 100 football recruits for the 2010 class. As Parker approaches his much-anticipated decision, the senior agreed to give readers a glimpse into the recruiting process with a diary every Wednesday, as told to Beaufort Gazette/Island Packet sports reporter Brandon Parker.
Turns out I didn't end up taking my first official recruiting visit to the University of Colorado last weekend because of some paperwork issues. The transcript that was sent up there before my visit didn't have my most recent SAT score listed and by the time that the Colorado coaches noticed on Friday, it was too late to process another form before my weekend visit (According to NCAA rules, all prospective student-athletes must provide an institution with a PSAT, SAT, ACT or PLAN test score, an academic transcript and register with the NCAA Eligibility Center before taking an official visit).
It's not an issue of me being academically eligible or anything like that; just a mix-up. Matter of fact, I'll be taking the SAT again this Saturday, so of course I'm hoping to do well on that.
I haven't talked with the Colorado coaches about rescheduling, but we'll see. I'm still looking at taking my official visit to South Carolina during the weekend of the Florida game on Nov. 14, but nothing's been finalized yet with USC or Clemson.
It was nice to be named to the Shrine Bowl and All-American Bowl last week. Making the Shrine Bowl was one of my goals coming into the season and the All-American Bowl was a nice surprise, so I'm excited to represent my school and state in those games.
We had a pretty tough loss against Summerville last week. Early in the game, we gave up some big plays and made some mistakes that hurt us. It's disappointing to not win region, but it's all about overcoming adversity.
Last year, we lost to Summerville and we never recovered. I think this year, our team understands that we can't let the same thing happen again. About two weeks ago, it hit me that this season and my high school football career is really winding down. On Friday, we've got senior night and our last regular-season game at home, but hopefully, we've got some more games left in the playoffs.
My top five schools (in order): South Carolina, Clemson, Wake Forest, N.C. State and Virginia Tech.
