Game notes: Airport (11-0) faced a real challenge last week in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, rallying from an 18-point deficit to survive 38-31 against Darlington, a No. 4 seed ... Thing could be even tougher this week when 10-1 Lake City comes calling in the second round … The Panthers, who have only faltered against defending state champion Myrtle Beach in Region 7-3A play, are an imposing, physically tough team that features rugged running back Shon Carson, who already has 1,746 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on the books. Lake City brushed aside Battery Creek, 46-12, in the first round while the Eagles were sweating it out in their postseason opener … The Panthers went 8-2 in 2008, but were ineligible for the playoffs thanks to their part in a brawl at the end of their season-opening game against reigning 3A champion Wilson. Lake City, in fact, was the only team to beat Myrtle Beach last season. It’s a good bet that the Panthers continue to reap motivational benefit from that unfortunate turn of events … So far, Airport has always found a way to overcome bad situations. It might be a different story if they fall behind against Lake City the way they did against Lugoff-Elgin, Battery Creek and Darlington … The big thing in Airport’s comeback favor is a relentless offensive attack featuring quarterback W.T. Murden and running back Ryan Smith. Murden has 1,036 yards rushing and is 149-for-230 passing for 2,049 yards. Murden and Smith both have 15 touchdown runs. Smith has 18 TDs in all. Murden has 24 scoring passes and just three interceptions. Two of those picks came last week … The pressure will fall heavily on the defense to deal with the Lake City ground game.
