Blythewood closed the 2009 volleyball season with an impressive 22-5 record. The Bengals shared the Region 4-4A championship with Rock Hill (9-1 region record) and were 1-1 in the Class 4A state playoffs – losing to eventual state champion Dorman in the second round.
”We had a solid season. We all would have liked to finish with the State Championship title however, that was not in the cards this season,” said coach Mary D. Hall.
“Although we had talent all the way across the board my team lacked consistency. I'm very proud of what the team accomplished this year and I look forward to great things to come. It’s a learning and growing process. We will continue to capitalize on our strengths and minimize our weaknesses. We will set specific goals next season and attack them one at a time.
“Losing seniors is always a difficult thing to face and my seniors will most definitely be missed. Caleen Hawkins, Andrea Keesee, and Murphye Williams will be continuing their education and volleyball careers at the next level and I wish them all the best.” Hawkins, the team’s driving force at the setter position, outside hitter Keesee and outside hitter Murphye Williams are the departing seniors. Hawkins and junior middle hitter Courtney Williams were both named to the all-region and all-state teams. Hawkins, the region player of the year, was selected to play in the annual North-South All-Star game.
Never miss a local story.
The regulars expected to return next season include Williams, defensive specialist Ashley Williams, right side hitter Victoria Harley, middle hitter Meredith Jones and Librero Courtney Person.
