Mid-Carolina’s boys basketball team continues its quest to return to the Class 2A state playoffs this season with five returning starters and nine lettermen in tow. The Rebels were bitterly disappointed a year ago by missing the cut last season after going 3-7 in Region 3-2A play and finishing 10-10 overall.
“The strength of the team is our experience and team togetherness,” said coach Zeb Reid.
Seniors Calvin Herbert and Krishawn Holley lead the way. Herbert, a 6-2 forward, averaged 14 points and nine rebounds last season and is a two-time, all-region pick. He needs 97 rebounds to pass Raley Downing as the school’s career rebound leader. Downing graduated in 1970. Holley averaged 10.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals last season.
Senior point guard Hubert Wicker and junior guards Mac Lake and C.J. Edwards are the other returning starters.
Senior Kendrelle Neal, junior Franklin Cheeks and sophomores Jacobi Boyd and Jared Parnell provide experience off the bench.
The Rebels, who have not made the playoff cut since 2003, open the season on Dec. 1 at Whitmire.
