Airport closed the 2009 volleyball season with a 12-9 overall record and a third-place finish in Region 5-3A with a 7-3 conference record. The Eagles handed region champion Brookland-Cayce its lone conference setback, and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs for the first time since 2006.
“We had a great season and accomplished some things we haven't done at AHS in years,” said coach Jessica Kerbs.
“We made it to the second round of the playoffs for the first since I’ve been at AHS, we beat our rival (B-C) for the first time in almost eight years and we played well as a team most of the season. We are losing two big seniors this year, but we will have ten returning juniors and two returning sophomores for next season. I wish we could have gone further this year, but I am ready for next volleyball season to come to see where the returning girls can take us.”
Airport’s regular rotation this season featured senior Whitney Brown (setter), junior Danielle Sox (setter), senior Taniqua Canzater (Middle), junior Denise Bonnette (middle), junior Dasha Bookman (outside), junior Haley Pipkin (outside), sophomore Dina Henderson (right side), junior Brigette Shumpert (outside), junior Chloe Perkins (libero), junior Cassie Shumpert (defensive specialist) and sophomore Madison Boatwright (defensive specialist).
Never miss a local story.
Bookman was named to the CAWS all-state team. Brown and Canzater were the Eagles’ all-region picks.
