Andy Edgren’s Hammond volleyball team turned in another strong showing in 2009. The Skyhawks finished in a three-way tie for the SCISA Region 1-3A championship with Cardinal Newman and St. Joseph’s and made a good run at the state tournament.
In the end, Hammond posted as 10-5 overall record and an 8-2 mark in region play.
“This year’s team was one of the most unified teams I’ve ever coached,” said Edgren.
“Juniors and seniors reached out to freshmen and sophomores, creating an atmosphere where everyone was eager to give it their all for the team. We learned life lessons such as servant leadership, teamwork, and fighting for a cause greater than ourselves. These will all transcend this one season. Down to the final point of our loss in the state playoffs, I witnessed a team giving it all on the court, playing fearless volleyball and staying unified. I couldn’t ask for anything more than that.”
Hammond’s regular rotation featured junior setter Kaki Smith, senior outside hitter Sophia Chen , senior middle hitter Amber Bennett, senior rightside hitter Katie Hood, freshman outside hitter Bailey Dukes, junior middle hitter Elaine Epting and sophomore Caroline Hudon.
Smith, Bennett and Epting were named to the all-region team.
