C.A. Johnson’s girls baseball team is looking to move up in Region 4-1A this season with the return of four starters and six lettermen.
The Hornets finished 8-10 overall last season, but placed fourth in the eight-team region with an 8-6 conference record and advanced to the state playoffs. CAJ was eliminated by Indian Land in the first round.
Coach Melvina Pierce projects a winning overall record for her veteran team this time around, and a higher finish in a tough region that features traditional small-school powers Hunter-Kinard-Tyler and Blackville-Hilda. HKT was an Upper State finalist last season, while B-H reached the third round. Eventual state champion Christ Church ousted both HKT and B-H in the Upper State bracket.
The spotlight players this season for CAJ are senior point guard Whitney Green, junior forward Danielle Taylor, junior forward Khira McKenney, and sophomore DeJay Smith. Sophomores Logan Furtick and Asia Coardes also return with varsity experience.
