With three starters and six seniors back for another go, Irmo enters the 2009-10 girls baseball season with high expectations.
The Yellow Jackets were certainly good last season with a 16-8 overall closing grade, a third-place finish in strong Region 5-4A and a run to the third round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Irmo, however, wants much more this time around.
“We have a lot of experience, but finding the right combinations and team chemistry will be the key, said coach Monica Williams.
“We have been picked No. 1 in the preseason but Dutch Fork and O-W will be strong contenders also.”
The returning cast is headlined by last season’s top three producers – senior point guard Brooke McCants, senior shooting guard Brianna Stanton and 6-2 senior power forward Sarah Green.
McCants led the team assists (2.8 apg), was second in scoring (11.2 ppg) and 3-point shooting (22 field goals from beyond the arc) and chipped in 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Stanton averaged 8.9 ppg, and led the team in 3-point shooting (33) and steals (2.4 spg). Green was a major force inside, leading the team in scoring (11.8 ppg), rounding (7.4 rpg), FG shooting percentage (60%) and blocks (4.3).
Sophomore Brittany Golden, a 5-11 wing, and senior guard Melissa Britt also return with experience. Golden average 2.8 ppg and 3.7 rpg, while Britt averaged 2.5 ppg and shot 41% from 3-point range (13-for-32).
Newcomers to watch include 5-11 junior forward Jemekia Wilson and 6-2 sophomore center Desiree McCray.
