Alonzo Grant and Theo Shephard paced Lugoff-Elgin’s third-place finish at the Palmetto State Classic wrestling tournament at Irmo.
Grant and Shephard were the Demons headliners thanks to championship showings at 145 and 215 pounds, respectively. Junior Will Connell, the defending 3A state champion at 171, lost in the PSC 171 title bout to Irmo’s T.J. Dudley, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.
Grant went 4-0 and beat Stratford’s Nathan Grinsteiner 8-3 in the championship finals. Grant, a state qualifier at 135 a year ago, pinned his way to the title bout. Shephard, a varsity newcomer, make a big early impression with his 4-0 title run. He defeated Spring Valley’s 10-5 in the finals. Connell had three straight pins before running into Dudley in the 171 finale. The rising Irmo star beat Connell 9-5 in the first-place showdown.
Max Fowler, and Tony Murphy were L-E’s other place finishers. Fowler went 2-1, dropping a tight, 3-1 decision to Fort Dorchester’s Keyson Flores in the 189 finale. Murphy went 4-1 and finished third at 119. Murphy bounced back strong after being pinned by Summerville two-time state champion Aaron Hansen in the semifinals.

Marcus Long (3-2 at 103), Parker Singleton (3-2 at 135), Thomas Perkins (3-2 at 140), Will Myers 3-2 at 152) and Jonathan McManus (2-2 at 285) just missed earning a place finsh. All five were eliminated in the consolation semifinals.
