Sumter cracked the Top 10 at the Palmetto State Classic wrestling tournament last weekend at Irmo. The Gamecocks, ranked No. 12 in Class 4A by scmat.com, finished in eight place with 97 points.
Trevor Jahnke and Josh O’Conner placed the Sumter performance with consolation championship efforts at 215 and 285, respectively. Both went 4-1 in tournament action, but took different paths to the consolation title. Jahnke, a who who went 28-10 last season, lost to eventual champion Theo Shephard in his first match, then went 4-0 in the consolation bracket, beating John White of Nation Ford in the third-place finale. O’Conner, a promising sophomore heavyweight, bounce back from a 9-4 semifinal loss to Fort Dorchester’s Michael Sellers to go 2-0 in the consolation bracket. O’Conner nipped Luke Bone of Stratford in the third-place final.
Ross Watson and T.J. Colvin also placed, finishing fourth at 140 and 171, respectively with 4-2 records.
