White Knoll’s wrestling capped a busy and productive December with a strong, fourth-place performance last weekend at Lugoff-Elgin’s MPCU Holiday Classic tournament and a 4-1 team effort at the Warrior Duals hosted by West-Oak on Tuesday.
Jamal Lackey was WK’s championship performer at L-E, winning 135-pound honors with a 4-0 record. Jake Beckett was the other T-Wolves finalist, finishing second at 140 with a 3-1 mark.
Chad Lee, Phillip Austin and Austin Lee were the other place winners. Chad Lee took third place at 152 with a 5-1 record, winning five straight matches after opening the tournament with a loss. Austin went 5-1 at 160 and shared consolation honors. Austin Lee’s 3-2 effort was good for fifth place at 119.
David Smith (3-2 at 103) and Chris Jeffries (3-2 at 112) just missed placing.
White Knoll defeated Gaffney, Seneca, Greenwood and Boiling Springs at the Warriors Duals before falling 35-25 to Belton-Honea Path in the finals.
“We started off the season a little slow due to weight certification,” said WK coach Kevin Emily.
“Once we got everyone down to weight we got a big win against Ft Mill and we have managed to keep the ball rolling. We led the Outback Invitational going into Saturday morning but had a few set backs in the semis and couldn't hold the lead. It was a good measuring stick for where we need to be however. We went into the (L-E tournament) with the goal of winning it but we had a terrible Friday and did not show up.”
Lackey, a transfer from Tennessee, has been a nice addition to the team, said the T-Wolves coach.
“All in all I'm pleased with our progress thus far,” said Emily.
“We are well aware that we have a long way to go so at this point but we are continuing to correct the mental mistakes that are holding us back.”
