Player of the Year: Walker Layne
What he did: Won state titles in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.
What is your first memory of swimming? I had swim lessons in someone's backyard pool when I was about 5. I had a lot of fun doing it, but it was hard at first. But then I really enjoyed doing it after I got the hang of it.
What was your first competition? I was really young. I remembered that it was long and I really hated to lose.
What is your favorite event? I really like the 100 backstroke; it's my best and favorite event.
Who's an athlete you admire? Robert Margalis. He's a swimmer, but you've probably never heard of him. He's gotten third at Olympic trials like eight times, and you have to make second to make the team. It just lets me know that determination is great, but it won't always get you where you want to be. You need heart and skill and people supporting you, too. A lot of things have to be in place.
What do you do when you're not swimming? I'll be playing Frisbee, doing homework, maybe playing a few video games.
Describe yourself in three words: stubborn, loyal and lighthearted.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? A solid, working adult, working for a computer engineering company, getting my swimming on the side to stay active and just living my life to the fullest.
What is you favorite pregame meal? I eat burgers a lot. I know that's not what you're supposed to do, but I eat them at any time around a meet, and I've never had a problem with it.
On a highlight reel of your season, what would be the soundtrack? Well, what usually goes through my head is a lot of heavy metal that I listen to before races, a band called HEISLEGEND.
What was the best part of your high school career? My freshman year, our medley relay was just superpowered. I had a good time working on it, and we all got to be good friends.
