If you need drama in your life, then the Goose Creek boys basketball team is the squad for you.
For the second consecutive playoff game, the defending Class 4A champions wiggled off a big hook to keep hopes of a repeat alive, squeaking past Irmo 73-69 in overtime Friday.
"At this point, when you advance, you advance," Gators coach Brad Dobbels said. "That's all that matters."
But they had to overcome another double-digit deficit to do it. After rallying from a 36-23 halftime deficit, the Gators (22-3) forced overtime, during which two technical fouls called against Irmo, the last one with 2.7 seconds left when the Yellow Jackets (18-8) called a timeout when they had none.
Never miss a local story.
Guard Devontae Wright, who had hit a pair from the line to make it 72-69, hit one free throw to seal it and Irmo didn't take the floor for the final ticks of the clock. Earlier, Irmo's Josh Clinkscales was hit with a technical after arguing a call and Louis Williams made four free throws to give Goose Creek a 66-59 lead with 2:20 remaining.
The Gators hit 12 free throws during overtime, including the final seven from Wright that helped them stave off Irmo's charges. Twice, Wright made a pair from the line after Irmo cut it to one possession.
"You've got to give our guys credit for buckling down and coming out great after halftime," said Dobbels, whose team trailed by 11 in the playoff opener against South Florence on Wednesday before rallying for a 61-56 victory. "It took us a while to get over the hump but we were finally able to get there."
Geno White hit a pair of free throws with 12.8 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 59 and the Yellow Jackets were unable to get off a shot, sending the game into overtime.
Raemond Robinson and Brandon Shell scored 15 apiece for the Gators. David Frazier and Jordan Roper had 16 each for Irmo.
The Gators now turn their focus to a home game with Fort Dorchester. They won the last meeting 69-51 on Jan. 8.
"They're really athletic," Dobbels said. "We have to really guard them and limit their easy shots. It's a tough matchup for us. Hopefully we can survive like we have the first two rounds."
