ROCK HILL - Northwestern girls basketball coach John Bramlett said he knew the Trojans would have their hands full Tuesday with Spring Valley.
He didn't know the defending champion Vikings would shoot 65 percent from the floor, however.
The Vikings used that on-the-mark shooting and a 20-2 second-quarter run to defeat Northwestern 86-56 in Class 4A quarterfinal action on Tuesday. Xylina McDaniel scored a game-high 25 points for Spring Valley (25-2).
"I thought we played hard for the entire game," Bramlett said. "We just ran into a Spring Valley team that shot extremely well tonight. I don't think they even expected to shoot as well as they did."
Never miss a local story.
Northwestern (24-2) matched Spring Valley shot for shot in the first quarter. The Trojans took one-point leads on three occasions.
Xy'resha Stewart roped a no-look pass to Kalima Blake for a layup and a 12-11 lead with 2:20 left in the quarter. That would be the Trojans' last lead of the game, however. The Vikings scored five unanswered points for an 18-13 lead after the first quarter.
Spring Valley then went on a 20-2 run to start the second quarter. Briana Robinson kick-started the outburst with back-to-back 3-pointers. Then McDaniel and Robinson combined for 10 unanswered points.
Northwestern, meanwhile, committed nine second-quarter turnovers. The Vikings had none.
"We came out hot and did what we do best with the full-court pressure," Spring Valley coach Anne Long said. "Robinson and (Asia) Dozier really opened the game up for our post players, too."
Mariah McCoy hit consecutive baskets in the final minute, but the Trojans still trailed 46-21 at halftime.
Northwestern played even with the Vikings in the third quarter behind eight points from Kelia Shelton and six from Amber Stewart, so Long took a timeout at the 3:15 mark.
McDaniel keyed a 7-0 run after that, and the Vikings coasted to an Upper State championship matchup against Greenwood (22-4) at the Bi-Lo Center at 7 p.m. Friday.
Robinson finished with 21 points, Dozier added 18, and Shaquita Walker had 10.
Shelton led Northwestern with 18 points, and Stewart added 16.
