Lexington’s Alex Morales entered the season ranked No. 1 at 160 pounds in Class 4A wrestling, and that’s the way the Wildcats junior star finished things at the annual state tournament last weekend in Rock Hill.
Morales concluded a perfect postseason performance by dominating Spartanburg’s Hunter Allen in the championship finals, winning 12-1. In the process, Morales became the ninth state champion in program history.
Morales, who was a fourth-place finisher at 160 as a sophomore, has a chance next season to become the school’s third multiple state champion, joining Clay Cavanaugh and Lincoln Glover. Cavanaugh and Lincoln teamed up for five state titles between 1992 and 1994. Cavanaugh claimed three straight gold medals (1992-94). Glover secured back-to-back state triumphs (1992-93).
Senior Garrett Corbett and sophomore Scott Tyndale were the Wildcats other place finishers this season. Corbett finished fourth at 119, and Tyndale was fourth at 125.
Steven Steinbacher, a consolation champion at 103 a year ago, went 1-2 and did not place this time around. Freshman Russell Taylor (103) and senior D.J. Crawford both went 0-2.
