With eight veterans in tow, Brookland-Cayce is loaded up for yet another run at a Class 3A state softball championship this spring under veteran coach Richard Lundy, who sports a 503-149 career record.
The Bearcats, who won the 2008 title and fell J.L. Mann in the 2009 championship series, entered the new season ranked No. 2 in the coaches’ preseason poll behind the defending champion Patriots.
The top returning starters are senior Alex White and sophomore Chandler Terrapin, who both have been starters since their seventh-grade seasons.
White, who moves from third base to shortstop this spring to fill the spot vacated by the graduation of Casey Corbitt, sports a career .355 batting average with 122 RBIs and 19 home runs. The all-state pick had career highs in batting average (.424), hits (50), RBIs (30) and stolen bases last season, and matched her single-season high of sin home runs that she previously set in her rookie season (2005).
Terrapin is back for her fourth season as the ace of the B-C pitching staff. Last season, she went 23-10 with a 0.63 ERA and 304 strikeouts in 232.2 innings in the circle. Opposition batters managed a paltry .130 batting average against her. Terrapin stands at 65-25 with a 1.00 ERA for her career and 682 strikeouts for her career. Terrapin also became an offensive force in 2009, finishing with .439 batting average, 19 RBIs and five home runs. She delivered in the clutch come playoff time – beating archrival Midland Valley twice with key blows in the Lower State tournament, including a home run in the LS final in a 1-0 win that sent B-C on to the state championship series.
Otherwise, senior Ashlyn Hicks (.294, 24 runs, 11 RBIs) is back at catcher, senior Alexis Lucas (.240, 14 RBIs, solid glove) returns at first base, junior MC Smith shifts from center field to second base in place of departed veteran Marquitta Wilson and speedy junior Asia Benn slides over to center field from left.
Eight-graders Caroline Reid and Brooke Lucas, who played key roles in the playoffs last season after being promoted from the junior varsity squad, move into full-time roles on the big club in 2010. Reid, who hit .333 in 45 postseason at bats, takes over in left field, and Lucas is set at third base.
Holly Helms, another promising eight-grader, is the new starter in right field.
B-C opened the season with a 6-0 Region 5-3A win over neighboring Airport on March 8.
