Rain caused most of the baseball and softball playoff elimination games scheduled for Monday in the Midlands and Upstate to be rescheduled to tonight.
But a few area teams put their seasons on the line.
The Dreher and Pelion baseball teams and Lexington’s softball team scored wins on Monday to advance to the district championship showdowns on Wednesday.
Dreher (11-15) thumped Darlington 16-8 at Memorial Stadium to rate a shot in the District 5 championship on Wednesday against Region 5 rival Brookland-Cayce. The Blue Devils will need a doubleheader sweep of the Bearcats at The Back Forty to move on to the Class 3A Upper State tournament.
Dreher jumped on the Falcons for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and put the verdict on ice with a four spot in the fifth after Darlington pulled within 12-8.
Eli Latham had a big offensive game for the Blue Devils, going 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and four RBIs. Bud Jeter was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Chandler Knox went 1-for-4 with two walks, two runs and one RBI and pitched the final five innings in relief of starter Marshall Baker.
Pelion moved on to the Class 2A District 7 finals by beating Ashley Ridge 6-4, avenging a 4-3 opening round loss to the Swamp Foxes. Wesley Camp was the winning pitcher for the Panthers (17-9), and Cody Kyzer paced the attack with three hits.
Lexington avenged a bitter 3-2, extra-inning loss to Beaufort in the first round, eliminating the host Eagles from Class 4A District 7 softball contention with a 10-0 win. The Wildcats settled the issue with a six-run burst in the fourth inning with all the runs coming with two outs.
Brittany Carr pitched four shutout innings in the five-inning affair, smacked three hits and drove in a first-inning run.
In other Monday results, Dutch Fork (baseball), Irmo (softball) and Camden (softball) were eliminated. Dutch Fork fell 10-0 at Stratford, Irmo dropped a 5-3 decision on the road to Summerville and Camden suffered a 3-0 home loss at the hand of upstart Crestwood. The Knights, who were swept by the Bulldogs during the Region 6-3A campaign, qualified for the district championship round for the first time in school history.
