Chapin withstood a late, error-induced rally beat Chapman 2-1 and nail down the Class 3A District 4 softball championship for the second year in a row.
The Eagles and pitcher Taylor Morgan cruised into the top of the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead. Morgan already had 10 strikeouts on the books and had allowed just two scratch singles. But two errors and a walk resulted in a Chapman run on the board and Panther runners on second and third base with one out.
Morgan, however, ended the drama by striking out the final two Chapman hitters to come to the plate.
The Eagles (24-4) open the Upper State tournament on Saturday against defending state champion J.L. Mann in Greenville. The Patriots dumped the Eagles 2-0 in the first round of Elite Eight play last season.
Chapin tallied all of its runs came in the third inning. Lauren Barton scored on Brittany Barr’s bases-loaded, fielder’s choice grounder, and Whitley Martin followed with a run-scoring single to plate Natalie Harper.
