The Pelion softball team closed the 2007 season with a 13-13 overall record, and a second-place finish in Region 5-2A.
“It was a good year overall, but we did not play well in the playoffs,” said Panthers coach Larry Poole.
Pelion earned a home date in the first round of the District 8 tournament by going 7-3 in Region 5 behind champion Barnwell. The Panthers opened the playoffs with a win over Bishop England, but fell to top-seeded Dillon in the second round and were eliminated one game short of the district final by Andrews, 5-4.
But Poole believes the experience gained will pay dividends next spring when eight returning starters will form a solid foundation.
Never miss a local story.
“We’ll have almost everyone is back but with Swansea moving into an already tough region, things will be very interesting,” said Poole.
Pelion’s departing senior starters are Cheyenne Crim and Alex Kyzer.
Tiffany Osmanski, Brittany Osmanski, Kayla Meermans, Rebecca Tims, Samantha Padgett, Rayma Shumpert, Jessica Williamson and Kayla Dooley are the underclassmen expected to return in 2011.
Tiffany Osmanski, Meermans, Padgett and Shumpert made the Region 5 all-star team, and Osmanski was a CAWS all-state pick.
Osmanski went 5-8 with a 2.90 ERA in the circle with 87 strikeouts in 78.1 innings, and batted .488 with 33 runs scored, 36 RBIs, 14 doubles, five triples, six home runs and eight steals.
Shumpert had a 6-4 record as a pitcher and hit .403 with 17 RBIs. Meermans (.378, 14 runs) and Padgett (.342, 24 runs, 24 RBIs, nine doubles, four triples, three homers and 10 steals) also had productive seasons.
