The Gilbert Indians did not repeat as Region 3-2A softball champions in 2010 or win a playoff district championship again, but the rebuilding Tribe did finish with an 11-10 overall record and turned in a Sweet 16 playoff showing.
Veteran coach Reuben Eargle was not displeased with the performance.
“We lost 10 of 15 from the 2009 roster, so this year was expected to be a struggle,” said the only coach in program history.
“We finished third in the region and that’s probably where we should have finished. We have seven starters returning, so I expect to chellenge for first place next season.”
Never miss a local story.
Gilbert remains in Region 3-2A, but the region will be a new-look group including Batesburg-Leesville, Columbia, Eau Claire, Keenan and Strom Thurmond.
Seniors Courtney Frye (.384, 17 R, 12 RBI) and Katie Ballington and junior catcher Victoria Burkett (.453, 28 R, 17 RBI) were the Indians’ all-region pick this spring. Frye and Ballinger are the only departing senior starters.
The rest of the returning regulars include first baseKathryn Cochcroft (.259), second base Savannah Anderson (.263, 18b R), third base Kayla Whitaker (.253, 15 RBI), pitcher Gabby Keisler (4-7, 3.29 ERA), pitcher Lyndie Dorgan (7-3, 5.11 ERA) and center fielder Hannah Bumgarner.
