Chapin put together a strong 2010 baseball campaign under veteran coach Scott McLeod. The Eagles assembled a 21-7 overall record, shared the Region 4-3A title with eventually state champion Lugoff-Elgin and advanced to the Upper State tournament by defeating region rival A.C. Flora in the District 4 finals.
“This year was a lot of fun with a great group of talented young men,” said McLeod. “It was much a team effort and the guys really cared about each other. We would have liked to gone farther (in the playoffs), but I’m proud of what we accomplished.”
Seniors Jesse Morris (9-0, 1.82 ERA), Alex Kirby (.412, 22 R, 22 RBI), D.J. Roberts (.341, 24 R, 19 RBI, 5 HR) and Alex Nicolai (.289) are the only departing regulars, which bodes will for another strong showing in 2011. The Eagles will be moving back to Region 5-3A next season with Midlands neighbors Brookland-Cayce, Airport, A.C. Flora, Dreher and Lower Richland.
“We should have a good nucleus returning, but it will be very difficult to replace a nine-game winner (Morris) and the offensive punch of Kirby and Roberts. The other problem we will have is finding someone to fill the shoes of our slick fielding shortstop, Nicolai.”
First baseman Caleb Mattox (.324, 22 R), second baseman Brian Langlois (.364, 22 R, 21 RBI), third baseman Cole Morris (.361, 23 R), catcher Zach Haralambis (.266 15 R, 12 RBI) and outfielder Will Clary (.424, 25 R, 19 RBI) return in the field, while Cole Lee (1-0, 4.20 ERA), Taylor Alvarez (7-5, 2.90 ERA) and Parker McTeer (3-1) will form the veteran core of the pitching staff.
