The Brookland-Cayce story of softball excellence added another chapter in 2010. The Bearcats rang up a 29-5 record, and advanced to the Elite Eight phase of Class 3A postseason action for the ninth time in 10 tries since the current playoff system debuted in 2001.
The only mishap of consequence was a loss to Darlington in the Lower State finale.
Seniors Alex White and Ashlyn Hicks and sophomore Chandler Terrapin earned CAWS all-state recognition, and White and Hick were selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game in Aiken.
All three were voted to the Region 5-3A all-star team, along with senior Alexis Lucas and junior M.C. Smith. Hick was named the region player of the year.
An injury kept Hicks from catching for most of the season, but that did not keep her from hitting .495 with three home runs and 36 RBIs. White, a six-year varsity started, bowed out with .360 average, seven home runs and 32 RBIs.
Terrapin had another great season for B-C, going 22-5 in the circle with a 1.10 ERA, and batting .434 with seven homers and 34 RBIs.
Lucas hit .271 with 12 RBIs, and was 7-0 with a 0.92 ERA as the No. 2 hurler.
Smith hit. 347 with 17 RBIs and scored 31 runs, second on the team to White’s 32 tallies.
Terrapin, Smith, Asia Benn (.286, 16 R), Brooke Lucas (.300, 30 R, 16 RBI), Holly Helms (.333, 24 R, 25 RBI) and Carolina Reid (.327, 28 R, 20 RBI) will be the veteran foundation of next season’s team.
Hicks will continue her playing career at Erskine and Alexis Lucas has signed at Columbia College. White is mulling offers by Lander and Wingate.
