Cardinal Newman and Hammond advanced to the SCISA Class 3A girls tennis semifinals thanks to quarterfinal wins on Wednesday.
The Cardinals (9-2) defeated Pinewood Prep 5-3 at home to advance to Friday’s semifinal showdown with defending state runner-up Porter-Gaud. The Skyhawks (10-4) dispatched Wilson Hall 7-2 to move on to a Friday confrontation with Hilton Head Prep.
Both matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.
Cardinal Newman received singles wins from Andrea Martin (No. 1), Alex August (No. 2), Brittney Desmond (No. 3) and Ali Black (No. 6). Martin and August team up for the match-clinching win in doubles.
Hammond secured the win over host by sweeping all six singles matches, courtesy of Maggie Herring, Caroline MacGillivray, Ali Gray Deloach, Madelon Kneece , Anne Elise Goudelock and Caroline Harris.
Callie Beal and Britt Harris closed out the Skyhawks triumph with a doubles win.
The semifinal winners advance to the 3A title bout on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
