Gaffney notes: The Indians improved to 9-3 under first-year coach Dan Jones with a 28-0 win over Wando in the first round of the Class 4A Division I state playoffs. Gaffney has won eight of nine games after getting off to a slow, 1-2 start QB DeEdward Burris was on fire, connecting on 22 of 24 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Quinshad Davis caught nine balls for 107 yards and one touchdown, while Khris Brown had six receptions for 85 yards and two TDs The Gaffney defense was dominant, allowing the Warriors a meager total of 111 offensive yards and, of course, no points For the season, the Indians are averaging 404.4 yards and 29.3 points a game. Burris is the prime mover of the attack, leading the team in rushing (810 yards) and passing (2,590 yards). He is second in scoring (11 TDs, 66 points). Receivers Davis (86-1368-15) and Brown (50-877-8) are the other key figures.
Irmo notes: The Yellow Jackets (10-2) breezed by Spartanburg 39-26 last week in their playoff opener. The final score is not indication how easy a verdict it was. Irmo had a 33-7 lead at halftime and was on cruise control the rest of the way Dawan Scott was in top form, rushing for 217 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. QB Cord Love also had a good game, completing 10 of 15 passes for 180 yards. WR David Frazier caught six passes for 129 yards
Playoff history: Gaffney sports a glittering 61-28 playoff record since 1970 and won six modern era state titles. The Indians’ three most recent championships came during the Phil Strickland coaching era. The last Tribe title was in 2006 Irmo’s first-round win evened its postseason record at 36-36. The Yellow Jackets one and only state championship came 30 years ago in 1980.
