Irmo returned to Region 4-4A boys basketball play on Tuesday night, downing Blythewood 47-39. The Yellow Jackets now stand at 10-2 overall, 3-0 in region matters.
Jordan Roper was the only double-digit man for Irmo with 15 points. Avery Johnson scored 13 points and Tre’von Williams added 11 for the Bengals (5-8, 0-2).
The Yellow Jackets enjoyed a successful holiday tournament season, winning a Division title at the prestigious Chick-fil-A Classic, and reaching the finals of the Upward Classic at Dorman.
Roper was brilliant for Irmo in the title bout with 43 points on 15-for-23 shooting from the field, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Gaffney and super freshman L.J. Peake. Peake rang up 22 points and beat the buzzer twice to make the Indians’ 83-82 triumph. Peake fired in a 3-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime, and his tip-in was the game winner in OT as the final gun sounded.
Richland Northeast (10-5, 2-0) returned to action for the first time in 11 days and scored a big 67-50 win at Ridge View (9-4, 1-2).
Travis Hammonds was the star of the game, leading the Cavaliers with 26 points, while Quinn Martin added 15 to cause. Kelvin Cruse and Chris Branch made solid contributions – scoring eight points apiece.
Stephen Rembert led the Blazers with 18 points and Jared Johnson scored 11.
It was a disappointing performance for Ridge View, which was coming off a 4-0, championship effort at the inaugural BI-LO Holiday Classic in North Augusta.
Elsewhere, Dutch Fork (5-9, 2-1) erupted offensively to whip Lugoff-Elgin 97-46. In all, 14 players contributed points in the Silver Foxes’ highest scoring contest of the season. Chad Geter led the way with 16 points, while Lamont Butler and Eric Bethel scored 10 points apiece.
Jojo Pellegrino took game scoring honors with 18 points, but the Demons fell to 3-8 overall, 0-3 in region matters.
On Friday, Lugoff-Elgin travels to Irmo, Spring Valley hosts Ridge View and Blythewood plays at Richland Northeast. Dutch Fork draws the bye.
