Eau Claire boys dump Keenan in Region 3-2A opener.

Eau Claire and Columbia opened the Region 3-2A boys basketball with impressive wins on Friday night.

The Shamrocks (9-3) dumped archrival Keenan 68-53 before a packed house at George Glymph Arena. EC’s big win was sparked by the sensational play of senior captain Dontell Riley, who poured in a game high 31 points. Ronnie Green and Adolph Caldwell backed Riley with nine and eight points, respectively.

Eric Washington (17 points) and Eric Tisdale (12) led the Raiders, who fell to 10-4 overall.

Columbia (6-7) snapped a four-game losing streak with its region-opening win over the visiting Rebels. Marcus Praylow was the dominant force in the game with 23 points, and had solid support from Casey Gladney (15 points) and McArtha Thompson (13).

The 3-2A slate for Tuesday night: Columbia at Gilbert, Eau Claire at Batesburg-Leesville and Keenan at Strom Thurmond.

Mid-Carolina’s Region 2-2A debut was not a good one. The Rebels dropped to 6-7 overall in the wake of a 60-57 loss at home to Broome. C.J. Edwards scored 14 points and Jacobi Boyd added 11 for M-C.

Newberry, meanwhile, pulled off a 2-2A sweep of Saluda at home. The Bulldogs girls team (5-6) got things started with a 51-45 win behind 18 points from junior center Tyndell Mendenhall and 13 by senior Kristi Hawkins. In the nightcap, Newberry (6-8) downed the Tigers 66-51. Arkeem Young was the Bulldog headliner with 27 points.

On Tuesday, Newberry hosts Woodruff, while Mid-Carolina travels to face Saluda.

In the first round of 5-2A play, Swansea pulled off a 54-53 upset at Silver Bluff. Kendall Rogers fired in a game-high 27 points for the host Bulldogs, but it was not enough to offset the balanced Tigers scoring attack. Junior forward Gerald Loadholt was the nominal Swansea lead with 15 points, followed by Domonique Brooks (10), Terrence Salley (9) and Byron Johnson (8).

Swansea’s girls took a 63-27 hit in the opener against the unbeaten Bulldogs.

On Tuesday, Swansea hosts Pelion.
