Notebook: 3A boys basketball

Camden prevails in Region 6-3A opener, while A.C. Flora and Dreher earn first wins in 5-3A.

Camden opened Region 6-3A play with a 54-31 win at Crestwood on Friday.

The Bullgos wasted little time establishing control against the host Knight, racing to a 12-0 lead at the outset. Camden then went cold and Crestwood crept within 18-12 by halftime before the Bulldogs regained control after the break.

Josh Council led Camden with 21 points, and Tayler Workman added 12 to the cause.

The Bulldogs host Hartsville on Tuesday.

In Region 5-3A, Brookland-Cayce (6-6, 3-1) took over sole possession of first place with a 72-62 win over Chapin, which has lost two in a row since getting off to a 2-0 start in region play, including an upset win over Lower Richland.

In other games, A.C. Flora and Dreher both picked up their first region wins.

Flora (3-9, 1-2) beat Midland Valley 59-56 with a balanced scoring attack featuring Desmond McDaniel (17 points), Matthew Howard (11) and Wildfred Roach (10). Quayshun Hawkins, who recently scored the 1,000th point of his career, led Dreher (9-7, 1-2) to a 54-38 rout of host Airport.

Tuesday’s games include Lower Richland at A.C. Flora, Brookland-Cayce at Midland Valley and Dreher at Chapin.

Fairfield Central, meanwhile, final gets into region play on Tuesday. The Griffins (4-9) make their Region 4-3A debut at Nation Ford, which recently dismissed veteran coach Donnie Holland.
