Lower Richland, Dreher and A.C. Flora all pulled off Region 5-3A varsity basketball sweeps on Tuesday.
The LR sweep of visiting Airport allowed the Diamond Hornets boys and girls to remain in sole possession of first place. After the LR girls opened the evening to a 50-38 win over the Eagles to improve to 5-0 in conference play, the boys thumped Airport 72-54 to improve to 8-9 overall, 4-1 in the region. The showed featured double-digit outings by four Diamond Hornets – Eric Eaves (19 points), Chris King (17), Edward Stephens (14) and Marcus Edmond (11). Manny Polston and Ricardo Matin scored 18 and 15 points respectively fot the Eagles (4-11, 1-5).
Dreher scored a 54-38 win over Midland Valley in the girls opener as Kayda Duckett rang up 21 points. The Blue Devils improved to 8-7 overall and are just one half game back of LR in the region standings at 4-1. In the nightcap, Quayshun Hawkins tallied 19 points while leading the Dreher boys (11-7, 3-2) to a 52-47 victory. The Blue Devils now share second place with Brookland-Cayce and Chapin.
A.C. Flora scored a 48-46 upset win at Brookland-Cayce as Michael Howard scored 17 points and Keon Hilton added 10. It was the first conference win in six tries for Flora. B-C dropped to 6-8, 3-2. In the opener, Flora’s girls 12-5, 3-2) breezed to a 60-42 success against the winless-in-the-region Bearcats. Alexis Jacobs paced the Falcons with 17 points, while Bria Kitt and Allie Gaddes both contributed 11 points to the cause. Asia Benn posted 20 points for B-C (2-14, 0-5).
Friday’s lineup features Chapin at Lower Richland, Dreher at Brookland-Cayce and Airport at A.C. Flora. The obvious highlight is the Chapin-LR boys rematch. Chapin stunned the Diamond Hornets 58-51 in the first meeting on Dec. 14.
