While the Lower Richland girls took care of business on Friday at Dreher, the Diamond Hornets boys basketball team did not.
The host Blue Devils made the Region 5-3A championship race interesting with a 65-58 win over LR, which now had just a one game lead in the loss column over both Chapin and Dreher.
Quayshun Hawkins erupted for 40 points in the key Dreher win, which left the Blue Devils standing at 13-8 overall, 5-3 in region matters. Hawkins was on fire, as they say. The senior guard was 8-for-14 from the field, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range, and was brilliant at the free throw line – converting 20 of 21 attempts. He also found the time to grab a team high seven rebounds, block one shot and come up with three steals.
Chapin (11-8, 6-3) also stayed in the hunt with a 47-44 road win at Midland Valley. Michael Kidd did the bulk of the damage with 22 points, including a clutch 11-for-12 effort at the free throw line. The Eagles trailed 23-18 at halftime, went on a 21-10 binge in the third quarter, fell behind briefly in the fourth quarter before finally putting it away with a critical 8-3run down the stretch.
Never miss a local story.
Meanwhile, Airport pulled off a huge sweep of archrival Brookland-Cayce.
The Eagles girls (16-2, 7-2) moved into sole possession of second place in the region thanks to a 67-36 rout of the Bearcats and Lower Richland’s last-second win at Dreher. Julisa Muldrow led Airport with 18 points, Taylor Vinson tallied 11 and Maya McCray chipped in 10 to the cause. Courtney Chisholm scored 17 for Brookland-Cayce (2-18, 0-9).
The improving Airport nipped slumping B-C 58-57 as Ricardo Martin scored 18 points and had 16-point backing from Bradley Knotts. It was the third straight region win the the Eagles (7-11, 4-5), who now is sole possession of fourth place in the standings and looking good in the state playoff hunt.
Jonathan Rumph scored 21 points while Curtis Barber and Tevin Lytes posted 10 points each, but it was not enough for the Bearcats (6-12, 3-6) to end what has now become a six-game losing streak.
