Second-ranked Chapin opened the Class 3A state wrestling playoffs with a 47-24 win over North Myrtle Beach, and will host defending Lower State champion Hilton Head in second-round action on Monday.
The Eagles (23-2) trailed just once in the match when NMB gained a decision in the 125-pound opener. From there, it was all Chapin. Austin Brown’s pin at 130 gave the Eagles a lead they never relinquished. Along the way, Stuart Hope (119), Nate Polly (135) and Scott Swindell (152) produced pins, Seth Stevens (160) scored a technical fall and Russell Smigelski (112) and Devin Lawrence picked up wins by decision. Chase Owens and Cody Brundage accepted forfeit wins at 140 and 145, respectively.
Dreher, the only other Midlands 3A qualifier dropped a tough 36-27 decision at St. James.
