Lower Richland’s girls basketball team officially clinched the Region 5-3A championship with a 54-24 rout of visiting Midland Valley on Tuesday. The red-hot Diamond Hornets (19-3, 11-0) are riding a 12-game winning streak and can close out a perfect region campaign with a win on Thursday at Airport.
Freshman Breshay Johnson tallied 20 points for LR who had 10 players contribute points but no other double-digit producers.
The Lower Richland boys (14-10, 9-2) maintained its one-game lead over Dreher by thumping the Mustangs 65-35. The Diamond Hornets got off to a slow start before rectifying the situation with a 26-5 burst in the second quarter followed by a 20-9 run in the third.
Eric Eaves led LR with 17 points and had solid backing from Chris King and Edward Stephens who scored 10 points apiece.
Dreher and Airport also pulled off region sweeps on Tuesday.
Quayshun Hawkins scored 20 points, Kevin Branch tallied 14 and Tyler Harris chipped in 10 for the Dreher boys (16-8, 8-3) in a 62-50 conquest of A.C. Flora. The Blue Devils, who have won four in a row, clinched no worse than the region’s No. 2 state playoff seed – thanks to its win over the Falcons and Chapin’s unexpected loss to Airport.
The Dreher girls (14-9, 8-3) dumped Flora 61-48 in the opener as freshman Kaydra Duckett fired in 20 points and Makayla Johnson tallied 10.
Simoy Evans led the ACF girls (14-9, 5-6) with 17 points. The Falcons will be the region’s No. 4 playoff seed. Desmund McDaniel scored 17 points for the Flora boys (4-16. 2-9). Whose season will come to an end on Thursday at home vs. brookland-Cayce.
Airport’s boys (8-12, 5-6) increased its playoff chances with its 53-48 win over Chapin, which ended the region season with a 12-10 overall record and a 7-5, third-place region showing. Ricardo Martin’s 24 points set the tone for Airport, which closes the season at home on Thursday vs. front-running Lower Richland. Brian Kidd and Michael Melvin scored 19 and 18 points, respectively for Chapin.
The Airport girls (18-2, 9-2) smoked Chapin 50-24 as Taylor Vinson pumped in 22 points and Maya McCray contributed 13. Shaleighya Sulton scored 13 points for Chapin, whose season ended with a 2-10 region grade, 8-13 overall.
The race for the girls No. 2 seed comes down to Thursday night’s final region round. Airport hosts Lower Richland, while Dreher travels to take on Midland Valley.
