The SCISA state basketball tournament begins Friday and Saturday with first round games at various sites around the state, including Heathwood Hall. The action shifts to the Sumter Civic Center next week for the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds.
Heathwood Hall’s boys team, by virtue of its big win over Cardinal Newman in the Region 1-3A finale, earned the region’s No. 1 seed and draws a Class 3A first round bye. The Highlanders (20-6) won’t play until Feb. 23 in Sumter against either Hilton Head Prep or Florence Christian in the quarterfinal round.
All other Midlands teams will be in action this weekend.
Cardinal Newman (25-3) and still ranked No. 1 ahead of Heathwood Hall in the latest coaches poll, opens the tournament with a 5:30 p.m. game on Saturday at Heathwood vs. Northwood Academy.
In other boys games on Saturday, Ben Lippen (10-16) has a tough game against third-ranked Porter-Gaud on the Cyclones home floor at 5:30 p.m. and Hammond (8-16) draws fourth-ranked Wilson Hall on the Barons home court at 5:30 p.m.
The girls tournament starts on Friday. Fourth-ranked Heathwood Hall (19-5) takes on Hilton Head Christian in an 8 p.m. game at home. The Highlanders rolled to the Region 1-3A championship with an 8-0 region mark.
Elsewhere, Cardinal Newman (14-11) travels to face Orangeburg Prep at 8 p.m., Hammond (7-16) draws faces Wilson Hall at 8 p.m. on the Barons home floor and Ben Lippen (6-17) meets mighty Hilton Head Prep at 6:30 p.m. at Pinewood Prep.
