C.A. Johnson turned up the defensive heat in the second half at Landrum. The result was a 54-40 win over the host Cardinals in the second round of the Class 1A state playoffs and an Elite Eight spot for the second year in a row.
The Green Hornets (15-11) travel to face Abbeville on Tuesday at Mid-Carolina High for the right to play in the Upper State championship game on Feb. 25 at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville. CAJ has made it past the third round of the postseason just three times during its SCHSL history. The other time was during the 3A state championship run in 1989.
The Green Hornets trailed 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and were down 24-22 at the break, but things changed in the third quarter. C.A. Johnson’s pressure defense limited the Cardinals to just one field goal during the fateful third.
Gerald Shooks, Denzel Stroman and Jonathan Goodman shared scoring honors for CAJ with 12 points apiece.
