John Combs’ Ridge View road warriors pulled off a come-from-behind 64-61 win over Region 4 co-champion Aiken on Saturday to qualify for the third round of the state basketball playoffs for only the second time in program history.
Moving on the state semifinals for the first time is the next goal when Ridge View travels to face Region 6 champion Sumter on Tuesday in the Elite Eight phase of the Class 4 boys state playoffs. RV opened the playoffs with a 57-51 first-round win at Wando.
The Blazers (19-6) trailed the host Hornets big, 45-28, at halftime but enjoyed a 35-19 after the break to pull it out. Cameron Lee scored five of his 15 points in the final 2:30 of the game, including 3-pointer that pulled RV within one point. Marion Jenkins followed with a lay-up that put the Blazers ahead for good. The Blazers put it away by going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the final minute. Jenkins also had a key blocked shot.
Lee emerged as team scoring leader, but he had solid support from Jared Johnson (14 points), Jenkins (11) and Jamie Portee (9). Ridge View shot 15-for-18 at the line for the game.
The Blazers take on a Sumter team that crushed Summerville 71-44 on Saturday.
