With 12 experienced players returning off a team that went 18-10 a year ago, the Lexington softball team enters the 2011 season with high expectations.
The veteran cast features junior pitcher-shortstop Brittany Carr, senior first baseman Kaley Wilson, sophomore second baseman Maddie Labrador and senior shortstop Lindsey Gore. All four were named to the all-region team last season. Carr was an all-state pick.
Gore and senior center fielder Amber Allen have already committed to college at Spartanburg Methodist and USC-Beaufort, respectively.
Seniors Bri Fossell (C), Jessica Wells (C./OF), Megan Lynch (3B), Justina Thornton (LF), Sarah West (RF) and Missy Kelly (OF/DH) and eighth-grader Natalie Willis (P/INF) all contributed to last season’s success.
Newcomers include sophomore Emily Willis and freshmen Emily Mattone and Kayley Mack.
The immediate goal is to make a serious run at the Region 5-4A championship against traditional powers White Knoll and North Augusta. The Wildcats waste no time in getting down to business with a season/region opener tonight (March 8) at North Augusta.
