Fifth-ranked Gilbert opened the Region 3-2A baseball season with a 5-2 win over Batesburg-Leesville on Tuesday night. The verdict upped the Indians’ season record to 6-1.
Josh Tronco was the winner on the mound, going 6.1 inning before Connor Owings came in for a two-out save. Tronco allowed three earned runs and eight hits while striking out eight and issuing just one walk.
Offensively, Owings, Tronco, Jason Smith and Dillon Chewning all had two hits. Tronco drove in two runs. Smith and Chewning also had RBI hits.
Owings, Taylor Burriss, Smith and Tronco are all off to fast starts with the bat. Owings is batting .545 and has already scored 11 runs. Burriss sports a .529 average and has 10 runs, three triples and five RBIs on the books. Smith is hitting .455 with eight runs and seven RBIs. Tronco is at .353 and leads the team with eight RBIs.
