Cardinal Newman, Brookland-Cayce and Lexington all finished the second round of play at the Palmetto Cup soccer tournament will 2-0 records and can clinch semifinal berths with third-round wins on Wednesday.
Cardinal Newman (17-3) struggled in the wake of Monday’s headline win over nationally ranked Norman (Oklahoma) North, but managed to escape with a 2-0 win over Eastside. The Eagles from Taylors jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 24th minute, but the Cardinals plugged away and secured the win thanks to goals by Nestor Jaramillo in the 33rd minute and Paul Anthony Raad in the 65th minute.
The Cardinals, who are riding a 16-match winning streak, face a traditionally strong Wando team that is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, but suffered a 4-1 second-round loss to Norman North at 6 p.m.
Brookland-Cayce went to 2-0 without taking the pitch at The Cage. The Bearcats were awarded a forfeit win over Pinewood Prep, which pulled out of the tournament on Saturday. B-C takes on Clover at 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Final Four as the Group C champion. Clover improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 1-0 win over Greenville in the second round.

Lexington will look to nail down the Group B title with a win over North Myrtle beach, which fell to 0-2 in the Cup in a 3-1 loss to Riverside.
