Irmo's Roper commits to Clemson

Point guard is first instate player to pledge to Brownell

Irmo combo guard Jordan Roper has seen enough of the recruiting trail. The 6-foot-1 rising senior committed to Clemson on Thursday after making a visit to Virginia Commonwealth this past weekend.

He was glad to have the process behind him so he can focus on the rest of his summer and his upcoming senior season at Irmo.

“It’s a relief,” Roper said. “This is going to allow me to focus on my game and let me focus on what I need to improve on moving forward.”

Roper is the first instate prospect to commit to Clemson coach Brad Brownell, who is entering his second season with the Tigers. Roper has been to Clemson several times and felt comfortable with the atmosphere and with the prospect of playing in the ACC.

“I’m pleased it worked out this way,” Roper said. “Things didn’t work out with VCU. I couldn’t think of a better place to be than Clemson. They are close to home, and it will give my family and friends a chance to come see me play. Plus, having the opportunity to play in the ACC is more than I could ask for. It’s an elite place to play basketball.”

Roper led the Yellow Jackets to the Class 4A state championship this year by averaging 20.3 points, four assists, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game. His other offers were from Tulane, Presbyterian, Tennessee State, UNC Asheville and High Point.

He will attend a team camp this weekend at Northwestern High. Roper attended the Elite Bob Gibbons Camp a few weeks ago, where his AAU team went 2-2. He had an opportunity to attend Chris Paul’s Elite Guard Camp but decided to attend the team camp instead.

“I thought it was more important for us as a team to bond and be able to stay together this summer,” Roper said of his decision. “Our goal is to win another state championship, and I felt like this was the right thing for me to do.”

It’s the first time that longtime Irmo coach Tim Whipple has sent a player to an ACC school.
