Airport’s Megan Stahlberger and Ridge View’s Mike Lantz were the Midlands headliners at the Cici’s Pizza Sandhills Invitational cross country meet on Oct. 8 at Clemson Research Park.
Stahlberger was the champion in the girls division, winning by a commanding 23-second margin over Eastside’s Oliva Svacha. Her winning time of 18 minutes, 31.56 seconds was the second fastest of her career, and the fastest she has run on the demanding state meet course.
Lantz finished second behind Drew Buehring of Fort Dorchester in the boys division, clocking in at 16:02.76 on his home course.
Heathwood Hall, the top-ranked girls team in SCISA Class 3A, had yet another strong showing against public-school competition. The Highlanders finished in fourth place behind Eastside (No. 1 in 3A), Wando (No. 1 in 4A) and just one point behind third-place Summerville (No. 5 in 4A).
Never miss a local story.
Junior Brooke Grice set the pace for the youthful Highlanders with a third-place finish and a time of 18:59.61. Freshman Sydney Ellen (6th, 19:29.10), eighth-grader Ellie Ridley (21st, 20:20.91), seventh-grader Kate Nassab (43rd, 21:16.56) and freshman Harriet Rogers (52nd, 21:39.09) offered solid support once again.
Ridge View had a fine performance in the boys division with a fourth place finish. The unranked Blazers finished one spot ahead of Wando, the fourth-ranked team in Class 4A.
