A.C. Flora’s Andy Campbell became only the sixth Midlands swimmer to go 2-for-2 in individual events at the boys state championship meet by sweeping the sprint freestyle races at the Class 3A season finale on Oct. 8 at the USC Natatorium.
The Falcons senior star prevailed in the 50 free with a time of 22.32 seconds and later scored a win in the 100 free in 49.38 seconds. Campbell also picked up a silver medal in the 200 free relay, teaming up with Jay Strum, David Metts and Garret Ocker for a second-place finish.
Campbell joined the select list that also includes former Flora great Bill Flett (50 and 100 free in 2008), Lexington’s Jeffrey Mead (50 free and 100 backstroke in 2010) and Mark McCartney (50 and 100 free in 2002), Chapin’s Walker Layne (butterfly and backstroke in 2009) and Dreher’s Matt Thunell (butterfly and 100 free in 2002).
With Campbell in the lead, Flora had the best Midlands finish in the team standings (boys and girls divisions). The Falcons scored 181 points, good for eighth place. Ocker backed Campbell with Top 10 finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle races.
Chapin checked in ninth with 169 points, and had the only other medal winner in the Midlands boys contingent in Stephen Bendziewicz who was third in the 50 free.
Dreher’s Mia Hahn was the lone Midlands medallist on the girls side. Hahn claimed bronze for a third-place finish in the backstroke.
Chapin was the area girls team leader with 126.5 points, good for 11th place in the final standings.
