Richland Northeast vs. Blythewood
Site: Harry Parone Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: RNE (5-2, 0-1) is coming off a 49-30 loss to Dutch Fork in its Region 4-4A opener. QB A.C. Whaley was 16-for-24 passing for 259 yards and three touchdowns. WR Chavarius Curry-Felix had seven catches for 95 yards and two TDs. RB Darius Paulk had 77 yards rusing and one score on 20 carries. Rorlanda Gilmore is the team leader in tackles (74) and sacks (6) Blythewood (4-3, 1-0) opened the region campaign with a 29-12 win at Spring Valley behind quarterback Demetric Gray, who ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and completed 10 pass for 127 yards and one TD. Linebacker Montel Richardson had a big game with five tackles, three sacks and 1.5 TFL.
Series history: Blythewood is 5-0 against district rival RNE. The Bengals, in fact, have won 19 of their 20 games against their District Two foes since their inaugural varsity campaign in 2006.
Irmo vs. Spring Valley
Site: W.C. Hawkins Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: This was once the headline rivalry in the Midlands, but this week’s 40th meeting will be a study of two teams still seeking an identity Irmo (3-4, 1-0) is coming off a 14-7 win over Ridge View in the first round of action in Region 4-4A. Spring Valley (3-4, 0-1) is fresh from a 29-12 region loss to Blythewood. SV has sputtered offensively since losing running back Jason Free to injury four weeks ago.
Series history: Irmo has dominated the Vikings of late, winning four in a row and eight of nine since 2002. The recent surge has allowed the Yellow Jackets to take a 20-19 lead in the series.
Ridge View vs. Dutch Fork
Site: Blythewood District Two Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: Dutch Fork (5-2, 1-0) opened Region 4-4A play with a 49-30 home win over Ricvhland Northeast. Brandon Quattlebaum had 146 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 23 carries and caught three passes for 30 yards and another tally. QB Derek Olencuk was 7-for-8 passing for 121 yards. Chad Jeter had an impact game on defense with five tackles, including 3 TFL and one sack. Paul Bynoe had two interceptions Ridge View (3-4, 0-1) finished with just 45 yards off offense in a 14-7 region loss to Irmo. The only Blazer tally came on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Tavarius Anderson. Willie Doctor (15 tackles, one fumble recovery) and Curtis Bey (11 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 blocked field goal) also played well on defense.
Series history: DF snapped a three-game losing streak with a 14-10 win last season, cutting Ridge View’s series lead to 8-7.
White Knoll vs. North Augusta
Site: The Wolf Den. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: White Knoll (4-3, 1-0) ended a three-game losing slide with a 14-7 success against Aiken in itrs Region 5-4A opener. RB Lamar Ray returned to action from injury and darted for 211 yards and one touchdown on 32 carries. QB Jake Beckett accounted for the other WK tally Fifth-ranked North Augusta (6-1, 0-1) suffered a 59-56 loss to Lexington in its region opener. RB Vinny Miller had 182 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries. QB Tyrell Hillary was 25-for-39 passing for 380 yards and five TDs. WR Montez McGuire had eight receptions for 131 yards and one score. Miller also caught a scoring pass from Hillary.
Series history: North Augusta has four straight wins against the Timberwolves, seven wins in nine tries overall.
Lexington vs. South Aiken
Site: WildCat Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: The second-ranked, undefeated Wildcats escaped North Augusta with a wild, last-second 59-56 win last week in the Region 5-4A opener for both teams. As usual, the offensive numbers were gaudy. QB Will Hunter was 22-for-35 for 310 yards and three touchdowns. RB Kevin Miller had 176 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 23 carries. WR Shaq Roland hauled in eight passes for 173 yards and three TDs and he added 34 yards and one TD on the ground. WR Jalen Cook caught nine balls for 75 yards and x TDs. On defense, Lance Cook had 14 tackles and one interception. Reserve kicker Adrian Leon’s 23-yard field goal with three seconds remaining in regulation was the difference South Aiken (2-5, 0-1) fell 26-18 to Orangeburg-Wilkinson last week.
Series history: Lexington prevailed 49-21 a year ago to up its series lead to 12-5.
Lugoff-Elgin vs. Conway
Site: Lugoff-Elgin. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: Lugoff-Elgin (2-5, 0-1) received a rude awakening last week in a 47-7 loss to host Carolina Forest in the Region 6-4A opener. RB Zach Connell provide a bit of light with 124 yards rushing and one touchdown on 22 carries Conway (5-2, 0-1) dropped a 20-14 decision to West Florence last week.
Series history: Conway was a 41-23 winner in the first meeting of the teams last season.
