The 2011-12 girl basketball campaign enters the final week of the regular season with the usual assortment of impact games that will determine region championships and/or state playoff berths.
The High School League playoffs get underway on Monday.
Here is a look at the various scenarios on Midlands scene:
Region 4-4A – Dutch Fork (9-1) and Spring Valley (9-1) should end up sharing the title, and prepare for a third potential confrontation in the Upper State championship game. The region’s playoff lineup is set entering the final week. Irmo (4-7) is Locked in as the No. 5 team. The Ridge View-Blythewood game on Friday will determine the third and fourth seeds. Both teams sport 6-4 conference grades.
Region 5-4A – Lexington (7-1) takes one last shot at first place on Tuesday against front-running Orangeburg-Wilkinson (8-0). White Knoll (1-7) has a slim chance of qualifying for the playoffs, but must beat South Aiken on Tuesday to have any chance at all.
Region 5-3A – Dreher (10-0) is out to lock up the title with a win Tuesday at home against A.C. Flora. Lower Richland (8-2) is set as the No. 2 playoff seed. Flora (6-4) and Chapin (6-5) are also in. Airport and Brookland-Cayce have missed the cut.
Region 3-2A – Columbia (8-0) and Keenan (7-1) will meet again on Thursday. It will be the final showdown for first place unless the second-place Raiders stumble on Tuesday against Batesburg-Leesville. Columbia, meanwhile, faces Eau Claire on Tuesday. EC has the third seed locked up. B-L, Gilbert and Strom Thurmond all have a shot at the fourth and final playoff spot. Thurmond has fate in its own hands with games at Gilbert on Tuesday and agsinst B-L at home on Thursday.
Region 5-2A – Silver Bluff and Wade Hampton are on course for a co-championship and a special playoff game on Thursday top determine the No. 1 state seed. Pelion (6-3) is assured of the No. 3 seed, but Swansea (3-6) needs a win on Tuesday against Edisto (2-7) to nail down the fourth and final playoff invitation. If the Tigers falter, the teams will play again on Thursday for the last postseason spot.
SCISA Region 1-3A – There is little suspense in the final week of the conference campaign. Heathwood Hall (6-1) clinched the outright championship with Friday’s 59-41 win over Cardinal Newman. The Cardinals (5-2) are set as the No. 2 seed.
