Lower Richland’s boys basketball team had to put its Region 5-3A championship celebration on hold after losing to A.C. Flora last week, but the Diamond Hornets rebounded from that disappointment to lock down the title with two wins in the final week of the conference campaign.
Thursday’s 49-40 win at home over Airport made it official. LR closed the region season regular season with an 11-1 record, one game ahead of Flora. Vincent Hicklin and Eric Eaves scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Diamond Hornets.
Manny Polston paced Airport (12-11, 6-6) with 15 points.
Both teams have qualified for the Class 3A state playoffs that begin on Tuesday. As a No. 1 seed Lower Richland, 16-8 overall, will host a first-round game, while the Eagles, the No. 4 seed, open on the road against the Region 6 champion.
