C.A. Johnson girls complete 10-0 region run

The Green Hornets crush Lewisville to put the perfect finishing touch on a Region 1-3A championship season. CAJ opens the small-school state playoffs on Monday at home.

C.A. Johnson’s girls basketball team completed a perfect, 10-0 run through the Region 1-3A season on Thursday night, downing 52-21.

Deja Smith’s double double was the Green Hornets highlight. Smith tallied 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and also was credited with five blocks, four steals and four assists in a fine all-around performance.

Smith had plenty of help from teammates Andrea Moye (4 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals), Shatavia Flowers (6 points, 18 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals), Logan Furtick (7 points, 8 steals, 4 assists) and Nakia Owens (4 points, 7 steals, 5 assists).

CAJ officially clinched the region championship with a come-from-behind 51-45 win at McBee on Tuesday.

Smith camed up big again with 14 points, 16 boards, 11 blocks, six steals and thee assists. Owens shared scoring honors with 14 points, and also contributed four steals and two assists. Moye and Flowers dominated inside again. Moye finished with eight points and 11 rebounds, while Flowers had 20 boards and four blocks.

C.J. Johnson opens the Class 1A state playoffs at home on Monday with a 12-9 record.
